Hate crime involves any offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal characteristic. It can be motivated by disability, gender identity, race, religion or faith and sexual orientation.

If someone or a group of people targets you, commits a crime against you, bullies you or harasses you, then this is a hate crime or hate incident.

This may include:

  • Verbal abuse
  • Offensive graffiti
  • Threatening behaviour
  • Damage to property
  • Assault
  • Cyber bullying
  • Abusive texts, emails or phone calls
  • Taking money from you.

The Welsh Government has created the victim support service to ensure victims receive support and can report hate.

There are locally based Victim Care Units who will make contact with victims who will then arrange for them to receive support within 48 hours of the report.

A needs assessment will then be carried out with the victim to identify what support is required.

More information on reporting hate crime and receiving the appropriate support can be found here. https://www.reporthate.victimsupport.org.uk/report-a-hate-crime/
