What we’ve done – events, activities and achievements

Here are just some examples of activities and projects Cadwyn tenants have been involved in recently…

Action Camp:

In August 2011 we took part in Young Wales’ Action Camp in Tenby.

Tenant Chatback website:

Our So Shall I’s group was successful in being awarded a Tenant Empowerment Grant (TEG) in 2010 to develop a website for tenants. Working with TPAS Cymru, the group took part in training, carried out research with other tenants and visited Hanover Housing in Staines to help them develop their online network. You can become a member of Tenant Chatback by visiting their website: www.tenants-chatback.ning.com .

Jubilee Gardens Eco Club:

Residents of Jubilee Gardens in Heath have set up their own group to work together to help improve their local environment. Established in 2009 the group have been awarded the Improving the Environment Award at the 2010 TPAS Cymru Awards and, more recently, the Royal Horticultural Society Award for Blossoming Group. They carry out regular estate litter picks, green-themed craft activities for children, planting sessions and are creating a wildflower garden in an unused communal green space.

See the Jubilee Gardens Eco Club short film on You Tube.

In the summer of 2011 the group worked with the Mobile Arts Project to create a large mosaic backdrop to their wildflower garden:

Voysey Bronna Young Residents:

The young residents of Clos Ty Bronna and Voysey Place in Fairwater have had a busy 2011. Many were involved in and inspired by our 10:10 event and wanted to continue to help maintain the woodland area where they live. The group were successful in winning £200 as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s Have a Wild Weekend for Wales campaign to buy tools and materials to make bird, owl, bat and dormouse boxes for the woodland. Working with Keep Wales Tidy the group have carried out litter picks, planted bulbs and – thanks to Chris from Keep Wales Tidy’s expertise – learnt more about the local flora and fauna!

TACT – Estate Walkabouts:

In 2011 we identified 8 priority estates to focus on and carry out regular walkabouts and events with staff and residents.  All staff were given the opportunity to attend. The walkabouts featured short questionnaires to identify residents’ opinions on their homes and community, what could be improved and if there were opportunities for further projects. We also invited Dr Bike along to some of the summer walkabouts to help tenants get their bikes roadworthy and promote greener, healthier travel!

Cadwyn visits Llangattock Green Valleys:

Tenants and staff visited Llangattock village (near Crickhowell) to see how this community has successfully implemented green initiatives. Cadwyn has already begun its innovative PV scheme to install solar panels on many houses and we are looking to continue develop our work in this area.

Tenant Satisfaction Survey 2011:

We carry out a comprehensive survey with all tenants every 3 years. Tenants are involved from the very beginning of process by participating in focus groups that develop the ‘key priorities’ section of the questionnaire. Tenants identify their key priorities and these are what help shape our our work and development of services in the future.

Cadwyn’s Food Co-op:

Launched in 2011 tenants, staff and the local community have benefited from the locally sourced fruit and vegetables available at our weekly food co-op.  We also have tenants volunteering to administer and run the co-op on a weekly basis.
