Cadwyn Housing Association grew from a group formed by Catholic Housing Aid Society in 1972 and was registered with the Housing Corporation in 1974 as Family Housing Association (Cardiff) Ltd., It merged with Single Parent Housing Association in 1986 becoming Family Housing Association (South Wales) Ltd., and changed its name to Cadwyn Housing Association in 1993.
In November 2005 Cadwyn opened Nightingale House, a family hostel. The aim of the hostel is to tackle homelessness in Cardiff by providing a temporary, safe and supportive environment to families, for a period of up to six months, that enables them to address issues and increase their skills and confidence in their ability to manage their future homes and lead settled and happy lives within their communities.

In November of 2006 Cadwyn demonstrated its continuing success by winning the UK Housing Award for Excellence in Social Housing in Wales. New schemes Calon Adref and Calon Lettings, as well as Nightingale House Hostel, have been pivotal in tackling homelessness within Cardiff since 2005.
Also in 2006 Cadwyn were awarded a RaceActionNet award for their work within Witness and Victim Support.
